  • Ovis canadensis [underlined] Disease: The jaws of 9 of the above dead animals were present + of these 6 showed ulceration. In two cases sufficient to have caused death. Several of the dead animals lay with bones undisturbed as a certain sign that death was due to disease + that there were so many dead animals the scavengers could not handle them all. In a number of instances two animals lay together on the edge of timber. The overproportion of rams may reflect an " of [male symbol]'s in the pop. [population] commented on by Simpson a selective kill or a more thorough disposal of the lighter skeletons of ewes + young. We found 3 rams dead since 1935-36 on the base of Bare Mt [Mountain] yesterday but no more recent kills. Yaha Tinda R. [Ranch] July 7/43 [1943] On hill N [north] of ranch saw a band consisting of 4 2 yr [year] + 3 yr [year] rams 26 ewes + yearlings + 21 lambs. Was not able to separate number of yearlings. On Mt [Mount] South, across river aw a band of 30 +/- sheep. Moult:- Young rams clean ewes moulting.
