Texas Creek, Lillooet District, Nov. 3-7, 1937.
This creek runs into the Fraser from the
west 16 miles s. [south] of Lillooet. Trail runs up
it some 12 miles to the headwaters. We camped
at timberline, 7500' for 3 days in an abandoned
mine cabin. Weather fine with high winds and
intermittent snow.
The dominant trees at the level of the
Fraser River are Pinus ponderosa, Pseudosuga [Pseudotsuga],
Pinus contorta, with some Juniperus scopulorum [tree species underlined]
in the drier spots and along the canyon walls.
Further up Picea Engelmannii and P. [Pinus] contorta
Murryana take the place of the lower trees,
Juniperus communis or J. [Juniperus] scopulorum. [both species underlined] Forest
continues thus to timber line where Pinus
albicaulis [underlined] is dominant with Picea and Abies
amabilis [underlined] abundant, quite a lot of aspen. Alder
and black poplar along the river at lower
elevations. Mts. [Mountains] high and rugged, with exten-
sive rock slides inhabited by Ochotona.
Pine [inserted later] Grosbeaks - fairly common.
Bohemian Waxwings - 35.
Clarke's Crows - very abundant.
Crossbills - 3 flocks.
Leucosticte - 12 scattered birds.
Goshawks 4 ad. [adults]
Downy Woodpecker 2.
Hairy Woodpecker 2.
Flicker 1, Nuthatches (red breasted) 6, Mt. [Mountain]
Chickadee several. No grouse, ptarmigan or owls
encountered.
