Banff. Alta. [Alberta] April 29/43 [1943]
In Kootenay Park saw sign all down the
road but first animals seen on slide
2 miles W [west] of Vermilion crossing. Here
2 bull moose + 5 elk were feeding
together. Willows + birches heavily browsed
many willows killed.
In Kootenay saw 4 moose - all bulls.
Diseases. Two of these bulls had the hair all gone
on upper shoulder + on rump. On
one a dozen or more large ticks were
visible around the anus. Apparently
tick irritation was responsible for
the other condition.
Census:- From Castle Mt. [mountain] camp to Banff
we saw 10 moose of which
3 [female symbol], 1 calf + 4 [male symbol].
Food: Watched a cow + a bull browse
indiscriminately on willow + dwarf birch
for 20 minutes. sometimes used molars
but more often incisors with an upward
stroke. Noted mod. [moderate] maple browsing, heavy
dogwood, willow + dwarf birch.
Association: 2 bulls feeding beside 5 elk
