Hoary Marmot
June 27. 1937 An old ad. [adult] animal seen on
rock slide east side of lake in valley below
road crowning Pass. Very wild. In appearances
head + shoulders very [illegible word crossed out] brownish.
July 1. 1937. Mt [Mount] Revelstoke Park alt. [altitude] 6300. Three
seen this a.m. [morning] Two near Ice Box Trail + one of them
a very large old animal, both very tame + allowed
close approach. Later collected a fine [male symbol]
far down side of mountain on rocky ledge. Whistle
much cleaner + sharper than cascadensis. In
winter pelage - very dark with much brown about
head + underparts. Very thin but fatty tissue
on flank bright yellow in colour. This afternoon
when exploring rockslide east of camp saw + heard
several marmots. Two were asleep on the rocks
+ were not much disturbed by my approach. One
old fellow actually came running towards
me to have a closer look.
July 2/37 [1937] Only one Hoary Marmot seen today
+ that one I collected. - a [male symbol] still in winter pelage
July 3./37 [1937]. Five seen today. Three on rock slide
N.E. [northeast] of camp on other side of mountain + the other
two at base of rock slides nw [northwest] of camp. All very
tame + allow close approach
July 4/ 37 [1937] - No marmots seen today too cold
+ wet.
July 5/37 [1937] Saw 2 on big rockslide. Were fairly
tame + allowed close approach. One kept
running ahead of me as I came down the
slide + did not try to hide until close to
the bottom
