  • from Masset. Walter, the co-op [co-operative] man- ager welcomed us aboard + we again made camp in shed at land end of dock. Once organized zipped down to Cox Island (failing to put up any falcons from Cliff en route). Found an easy landing on Langara I. [Island] side in spite of C. [Charles J.] Guiguet's diary inferring that landing is difficult. Collected some mosses, Each set 40 traps near back on N.E. [northeast] No falcons or eagles evident in cursory inspection. Rain. Returned to Henslung. Set 70 traps (inc. [including] 12 rat + 2 coni- bear) at head of Bay. May 24 [1961] Partly sunny In Henslung Bay traps (70): 5 shrews (2 skinned) 3 set off, 1 Fox sparrow. Fox sparrow nest on top of 1' grassy hummock. c [with] 4 eggs. Trees nearby. Second on Cox I. [Island] c [with] 3 eggs on 3' tuft, semi open. Skinned 2 shrews then hoped [hopped] into the Canora Craft + in short order were on Cox I. [Island] beach. Found we had to walk to west end (via south) to get up. When finally did, did not spend much time looking in burrows, consequently found no nests. No eagles + apparently no falcons nesting on island, tho' [though] pair of latter on "mainland" opposite + occasionally sally forth over to the island to have a look. Found 3 crows nests 6' up small sitka: 2 yn [young] 5 days, 10' up small sitka: 2 yng [young], 2 days., 6' up sitka 3 yn [young], pinfeathered (2 wks [weeks]?) Nil in our 80 Cox I. [Island] traps. Set 65 on Lucy + 72 in mainland by totems. May 25 [1961] Rain + sun all day - regrettably mostly the former. Nothing in traps on Lucy tho' birds + rats set off quite a few. On Graham I. [Island] only one Peromyscus [underlined]. After an abortive attempt which ended us up in wet salal, we finally made it to [word crossed out] across the neck of land to "Palm Beach" (Lepas Bay). Found bear skull en route. Magnificent beach - all to ourselves, the rain + wind, a few small glass balls, some large whale bones, and, a dead
