- Journal. Aug. [August] 17/43 [1943]
hair grass + a dark headed short grass
with pubescent foliage. Monkshood +
delphinium are present to the top along
with the large purple aster [word crossed out] erigeron etc. etc. [etcetera]
All these grasses are eaten, particularly
the hair grass in early spring + the tussock
grass at the same time. High winds keep
the ridge almost clear of snow as is
evinced by the dwarf birch browsed
to 6". Heavy moose browsing upon
balsams + available willows.
As for game there was absolutely
nothing on the entire ridge or the valley
of Rock Creek or the one leading to Deer
Pass. On the E. [East] side of Rock Cr. [Creek] the
shale slides showed trails that looked
like sheep trails. These lead to the hills
Dr [John] Hammet described as having sheep on them
after the first snows. These hills
probably support bands in slow
migration but we saw no evidence
of a summer population.
There are no deer at this time of year.
Game seen:- 10 goat on west side of Mowitch Cr [Creek]
N [North] of those seen yesterday
2 Caribou? On skyline of
deer pass.
Birds:- 1 Goshawk, 1 Peregrine, 5 Marsh Hawks
2 golden eagle. The hawks were hunting Callys [Callospermophilus]
+ Pikas on the rockslides. 10 Horned Larks
1 Blue grouse.
