- Picked up a fragment of
a deers skull at Clayquot [Clayoquot]
Buck in velvet. Entire fore
part of the skull + zygomaticus
missing.
The deer had well worn runways
through the sphagnum. In places
these trails were 2 to 3 feet deep
+ trodden hard. The leaves of
yellow arum all had the
top halves eaten off by the
deer. They were also eating
so [word crossed out] a number of other shrub
+ herbs, samples of which
were taken. In several
places the moss had been
pawed out of the side of the
trail to a depth of a foot
or more as if the animal
were searching for some particular
delicacy
The buck seen was not very
large - probably about 100 lbs. [pounds]
it was still in winter coat
+ had horns about 3 inches [inches]
in along it.
