- Banff, Alta. [Alberta]
June 2/43. [1943] (contd [continued])
In the Beaver meadow elk + moose
had been working about 50-50. Growth
is slow [word crossed out] late. Took a Fragaria, a
blue Viola [underlined] + Rubus borealis (arcticus?) in
flower - but dominant sedges etc [etcetera] are
not in bloom yet. Grazed [word crossed out] Browsed to capacity
but a heavy carry over of grass +
sedge.
In Black spruce muskeg dominant
plants are 2 codominant sedges - a
coarse leaved, silvery one not yet in
flower + a very fine one flowering
Shrubs - Betula fontinalis, cinquefoil,
+ Ledum about equally abundant
On the drier knolls Empetrum +
bearberry. Some small flowering
plants collected. Moose [underlined] utilization
entirely [underlined] + very light. Betula
not appreciably browsed but had
been heavily worked in former years.
On gravelly strip adjoining
stream about 7-8 miles along willows
90-95% browsed + many of them
dead most others dying. Here
Poplar used 70% + surviving
Lonicera (invol. [involucrata]?) fairly abundant + used
about 40%. Juniperus scopulorum [underlined]
is a starvation browse + is not
used here at all.
