- May 31 [1961] Dull.
Caught 3 large Peri [Peromsycus] along beach.
Athol [Atholl Sutherland Brown] dropped in again,
Collected more inverts [invertebrates]. Mike [Bigg] also
found another crow's nest on ground, 4 eggs
Have noticed 'coon [raccoon] tracks on Graham
Island opposite, but not on Frederick. While
passage is narrow + shallow, beds of
laminaria would make swimming difficult
Have pretty well cleaned up work in
this area; anxious for a trip to Langara
now. Food will be about out in another day
Deer remarkably scarce +/or wary.
June 1 Rain-wind-fog.
Nothing in traps. Picked all up.
A dismal day spent mostly around the
tent, or fire, trying to keep warm
+ dry. Occasional excursions to beach for aggits [agates]
Found the blue clams, when
pressure cooked then well fried, very
tasty
June 2 [1961]
Wind switched to light north-east
so decided to try making for Langara in
our rubber boat. Moved boat to a grassy
craddle [cradle] near low tide mark, + by time
we had it loaded, the water was beginning
to lift it. So with the last of
our heavy aggits [agates] aboard we sailed
off at 1:15 pm.
The five hour journey that ensued
took us thru [through] flocks of ancient mur-
relets, the occasional rhino [rhinoceros] auklet +
guillimot [guillemot] + a quizzical gaze from
passing brandt's cormorants. Saw only
2 sealions [sea lions]. At times passed close
to thundering breaking waves but
kept clear with quaking hearts. Was
certainly good to safely arrive back
at Henslung + be able to stretch our
wet, aching, cramped bones. (wind up to 15 mph [miles per hour] NE [northeast].)
Moved into hut at end of warf [wharf]
again + found the Challenger (Co-op [co-operative]
packer) in port. They will take us to
7 mile Sat. [Saturday] or Sunday.
Over to Lucy Island at Midnight
but even tho' [though] we had a gaslamp along
with us, all we could see was hatching
A. [Ancient] murrelets, adults, + a busy looking rat.
