May 17 [1931]. Traps held 2 peromyscus +
one norway rat. The woods
+ beaches are simply overrun
with these rats.
Saw a flock of 20 curlew +
a mixed flock of Dunlin +
Semipalmated sandpipers
Saw 5 Herons in one flock.
In the afternoon we went over
to Chesterman's beach where we
saw a flock of shore birds
containing Dunlin, Sanderling
+ Semipalmated sandpipers. Took
several. Found a number
of burrows + runways in
a small plot of grass on
the isolated reef in the
middle of Chesterman's
beach. Droppings + cuttings
look like microtus work.
Went round the point of rocks
to Garrods [also Garrard and Mackenzie] beach on the way
seeing a flock of 10 Black Oyster catchers + a Huge flock of
birds after a shoal of fish.
This was a wonderful sight, There
were about 800 birds in all. 1/3 gulls
and most of the remainder
Pacific Loons though great northern Diver [common loon]
murres + cormorants were also
present in some numbers.
Set two traps for mink.
