- Purchase of land from the Tribe or Family known as the Che-ko-nein extending from Point Gonzala along the Boundary of the Chilcowitch and Kosampsom Tribes as far north as Cedar Hill and including all the ground east of that line to the Canal de Arro and Straits of De Fuca. By examining the Fort Victoria Treaties, we gain insight into the early settlers' concept of polity and property and increase our awareness regarding the Indian interpretation of these significant historical events. Thirty men are named on the numbered list, each receiving three blankets, with the exception of three who received five extra blankets. The document establishes that the Chekonein Tribe sold their land to the Hudson's Bay Company for a total of 95 blankets and one cap (equivalent: 79 10d). A portion of this property known as The Fur Trade Lands, or the Hudson's Bay Company Uplands Farm, was purchased in 1961 by The University Development Board of Victoria College to construct a university.
