- Whitemans Cabin. June 15/43 [1943]
snow lay 3 ft [feet] deep on Feb [February] 27/43.[1943]
A Canmore man attempted to winter
22 head of horses last winter but
had to take them out in February
in very poor condition. Aside from
a little sign around upper Spray
Lake there is no sign whatever
of elk wintering anywhere from
there to here. Nothing but moose.
Because of the horse activity it is
difficult to ascertain the intensity
of moose browsing. The vegetation
is heavily cropped as it is (birch
willow + cinquefoil).
There were two or 3 elk tracks
on the trail but nothing like
as many as higher up - + no droppings.[underlined]
I should say definitely that the
elk of the upper Spray do not
come in this way! A few deer
tracks + some elk hair near
this cabin.
Game seen: - goat 4.
mule Deer 8
Moose 2.
