- difference in behaviour has been
isolated. c) The evolation of behaviour
in the gulls. d) The kittiwake
story is most interesting - ask Bill
Hoar to get me a copy of the paper
There have been radical changes in
behaviour from the ordinary gulls all
associated with cliff nesting. This cliff
nesting renders the birds almost immune
to nest predation. As a result the young
have lost their cryptic coloration. The adults
have almost no avian pred. [predator] pursuit pattern.
Courtship behaviour is developed entirely
from the nest associated sequence while
the other gulls have 2 sequences in the
courtship pattern. Nest building is diff [different or difficult] +
starts with a mud platform. The
young do not move around at all. They
will sit all day on the corner of your
table + never fall off. etc. The
cryptic color of the eggs is retained.
The systematist [space left blank] seems like
a live wire but I had little time
to talk to him.
Had a fascinating trip through
the Bodleian Library + in the evening
dined in Commons at Christchurch
July 15/58 [1958] London.
Left Oxford after breakfast
+ drove to Reading where I
looked up C.C. Balch at the
National Institute of Dairying Research
+ had a session with Pete Bailey
Baleh [Bailey?] has 5 fistulated cows +
a very interesting contraption for
catching the feces and urine separately.
His program at the moment concern
Hypo magnesia disease - apparently
it results from an interference with
the assimilation of magnesium resulting
from the very high protein content
of artificially fertilized spring pasture.
Some work on bloat that is
at the moment based upon on
attempt to see if the bloat producing
plants act by inhibiting the normal
belch producing movements of the
stomach. This is done with 7
balloons rigged on a metal rod to
keep them in position + placed in
the stomach. The [word crossed out] Each is connected by
rubber tube to a pneumatic [illegible word]
in a battery of 6 that record by
6 pens on a paper strip.
