- Mavis Lake - Goldstream District
May 9/41 [1941] Visited this area with Cowan [Ian McTaggart Cowan] who was
counting quadrats in deer survey.
Following were seen in lake.
Triturus [newt] - 4
Bufo [toad] - few black tadpoles, 3/8" [inch]
Rana aurora [Northern red-legged frog] - large tadpoles, 1" [inch]
Leeches - red copepods
Hyla [tree frog] - egg mass
Hairy woodpecker with young in nest in
snag about 40' [feet] from ground. Termites.
Dragon fly emerging. Robber fly.
Violet green swallows, Audobon's warbler,
McGillray's [MacGillivray's] Warbler, Junco, Brewer's
Blackbird, White breasted (?) Nuthatch.
8-10 deer put up near swamp South
of Goldstream lake. One shot for parasites.
May 10 [1941] No snakes seen at Elk Lake although several
were seen on the 7th.
One Plethodon [underlined] [salamander] collected near lower end of
Beaver lake by Cowan [McTaggart Cowan]. Hyla [tree frog] + Rana [toad] tadpoles
in old filtering basin of water works.
No amphibians found in lower reaches of
Millstream near train tracks.
Millstream Rd. [road] Pond. [all underlined] One phyllopod taken.
Hutton's Vireo (voice like jay) and warblers seen.
