Banff. April 29/43 [1943].
Travelling:- Tracks of a single elk were followed
from just above marble canyon all
the way over the divide to Castle Cabin
Camp a distance of 11 miles travelled in
one stretch
Forage:- Overgrazing of willows, dogwoods +
young [word crossed out] dwarf birches noted. Some grass left
by retreating snow.
These elk were right up to or even
ahead of the snow line but had left
mod. [moderately] good range behind them.
Food:- Dead cow 70% grass
30% Douglas Fir needles.
Census:- In Banff Castle Ranger Station to city
20 miles covered - Average strip 300 to
400 yds. [yards]
