  • Acknowledgements The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria is grateful to the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Museum Assistance Program for their financial support, which has made this exhibition and catalogue a reality. This exhibition would not have been possible without the generous donations throughout the years by a number of collectors in both Canada and the United States. A few of the large-scale donors include: Mrs. Helen Sawyer of Victoria, Ms. Joy DeWeese-Wehen of San Francisco and Mr. and Mrs. Francis and Kay Reif of Vancouver, who have donated sizeable collections of Chinese snuff bottles; Mr. and Mrs. James and Joanna Davidson of Victoria, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis and Ruth Sherman of Hamilton, and Mrs. Isabel Pollard of San Francisco, who have donated large Japanese netsuke collections; Mr. Hy Eiley of Toronto, who has donated numerous Chinese opium boxes, and Mr. Colin Graham of Bowen Island, who has donated a nice selection of Chinese pith paintings. The assistance of the following staff members has been vital to the success of the exhibition: Gillian Booth, Marlaina Buch, Jennifer Cook, Mike Elkink, Lori Graves, Chris Russell, David Seager, Nicole Stanbridge, Stephen Tpfer and volunteer, Fran Cornish. Paula Swart should be thanked for proofreading the text and making suggestions, and Joan Padgett for skilfully editing the text. Special thanks go to Bob Matheson for the difficult task of photographing these objects, and Frank Reimer for the carefully considered design of the catalogue. Thanks must also go to Michiko Warkentyne for her help with Romanizing the always difficult Japanese names on the tsuba, netsuke, inro and okimono. A final thank you goes to Marie-Helene Duval for the French translation. Snuff Bottle Tabatiere Qing dynasty, 19th century mottled pale yellow glass Private Collection, Intended Gift 23
