  • LEFT PAGE 294 Steam Ship "Shawmut" Built at Sparrow Point Maryland by the Maryland Steel Company for the Boston Steamship Company Launched in Summer of 1902 Cost $1,000,000 dollars (1 million) --- Length over all 505 feet Beam 58 feet depth of hold 48 feet --- Has a gross tonnage of 9606 Nett Tonnage 6196. --- She has capacity for 18500 Tons measurement freight and carries 1200 Tons dead Wieght --- She has 9 Hatches on deck and 24 Cargo Winches --- In addition to her 2 regular Masts, she has 6 derrick masts --- Her Bow anchor Wiegh 6 Tons Each with 150 fathoms of chain weighing about 50 Tons Each --- Haudraulic Steam Steering Gear --- 2 Triple Expansion Engines and Twin propellors --- Came here in August 1902 --- Copied from daily Colonist August 12 1902 RIGHT PAGE Steamer Princess Victoria" 295 Built by C. S. Swan & [and] Hunter at New Castle on Tyne England in the fall of 1902. --- Length between perpendiculars 300 feet Beam (Extreme) 40 feet 6 inches Depth (Moulded) 18 feet 6 inches. --- Has Watertight Bulkheads and a double bottom. --- Dining Saloon can accomodate 90 passengers Has large house on Hurricane deck 245 feet long. --- Machinery built by E. & [and] N. Hawthorn Leslie & [and] Co. [company]. Consist of 2 sets triple Expansion Engines, working on 4 cranks and balanced. Cylingers 24, 40, 47 1/2, 43 1/2 inches, with a stroke of 33 inches and are Expected to develope 5500 indicated horse power. She has 6 single Ended boilers Each 11 feet long x [by] 15 feet diameter, working at a pressure of 160 pounds to the [square] inch. She is Expected to make 18 Knots per hour --- Steamship "Pleiades" Built by Maryland Steel Works at Sparrow Point Maryland in 1900. Steel Vessel. 431 feet long, 47 feet Beam, 23 feet depth of hold.
