- Jasper. April 21/43. [1943]
Drove 45 miles south along the Banff
Highway.
On the E [East] side of the river there is good
elk country - Buffalo Prairie In fact
there was elk sign all the way
to Pobokton especially in the
aspen country around the lower
stretches of the river, again around
mile 13 + for 10 miles beyond
the Athabasca Falls cabin. Moose
sign was abundant between miles
18 + 20 + again near Pobokton.
From mile 13 up to mile 38 there
is no sheep country. but at 38 there
are some grassy slopes high up
on the Mt. [Mountain] to the east of the road
+ here a lone ram was seen.
[Warden Charles] Phillips tells me that there are
some more sheep (summer?) around
Jonas Peak + Nigel Pass.
Warden at whirlpool estimates
35-50 head of elk on the whirlpool
saw 25 in one bunch but mostly
pulled out for the winter.
Saw:- Elk go as far as Sunwapta
where they are not common but
are in fair numbers on the Chaka
Saw:- 5 sheep at Astoria Cr. [Creek] (8 mile) total
bunch estimated to be 20 head.
