clear, windy
Made mouse cage + repaired
capstan winch, looked without success
for cranes on meadow
July 24
Hiked out to McIntosh meadows +
south over ridge onto a beautiful tundra
tableland. Pr. [Pair] Cranes, r.t. [red-throated] loons, kingfisher
coon [raccoon] deer + dog tracks. Collected plants +
cyclops in lake. About 8 juvenile eagles
around 1/4 mile lake, bothering the loons.
Collected 5 lincoln's [sparrows] + 2 juncos in
M. [McIntosh] Meadows on way back
Excellent feast at P. [Peter] Hensons.

July 25 [1961]
Drove down to Q.C. [Queen Charlotte] City in am. [morning] to
put Cowan on plane for Vancouver.
Saw 3 doe, 2 fawn, 2 spike bucks, 3?
Had pow-wow with [Frank] Banfield + decided to head
off right away for Hippa. Boarded Beaver at
7:30 pm. + flew down narrows, north past
Marble I [Island]. Hippa loomed into sight with its
1500' nob [knob] crowned with a cloud. Landed
by sandspit on east edge, + with some
trouble, found a more or less level spot in
the rank grass behind the beach. Pitched
tent + each set 30 (2 = 60). Frank [Banfield]
set 36. Also set the 16 live traps.
July 26 [1961]
Cloudy, blowing
In traps - ours, dead: 2 shrews, 5 mice
including 2 adults with dark pelage, and
in live traps: 6 more. Frank [Banfield]: 1 mouse.
Moved some traps + set out more to
have total of 155 for us. Walnut bait
Walked north from camp, set
otter trap on 2nd [second] point around good
showings. The going got too tough so
climbed hillside + worked back. Plenty
of A. [Ancient] Murrelets sign.
Inflated boat + went to north tip.
Seas too heavy to land + look for otter sign
