  • was too shallow to use the engine. Saw [Great] Horned Owl. Fish Hawk 2 snipe (on Long Lake), 6 Short billed gulls + a Western Grebe (head of Ootsa Lake. Saw only 1 moose, a big bull on Long Lake. Bohemian waxwings in hundreds, several nighthawks, yellow warblers, song sparrows, water thrushes eagles + 4 broods of Red breasted [words crossed out] Amer. [American] Mergansers. Rufous Hummingbirds were quite abundant on all the lakes + rivers travelled. Tom McKinley, who traps on Pondosy Lake says there is a Wood Duck nesting on the lake every year. Last winter he caught 5 Lynx as well as 2 beaver + quite a number of marten, a wolverine + several weasels. He was once followed by 9 Black Wolves on Eutsuk Lake + shot 2 of them. Marginalia: local name for Goldeneye [with arrow to Wood Duck]
