- Foreword
The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria is very pleased indeed to be able to present Chinese Art in the Reverend Dr. James M. Menzies Family Collection.
The collection was brought together by Rev. Menzies in the 1920s-1930s and represents a rare specialization in oracle bones, and a breadth of works in other media. The fact that the collection remains in family hands and of family interest is unique in itself, and the Gallery is very grateful to the Menzies family: Mrs. Marion Menzies Hummel, Mrs. Frances Menzies Newcombe.and Mr. Arthur R. Menzies for their generous loan of these works of Chinese Art. Our appreciation is also extended to the family for their very generous gifts to the Chinese collection of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.
I would like to thank Barry Till, Curator of Asian Art, for his co-ordination of this exhibition and publication, and to all staff and financial contributors who have made it possible.
To be able to witness the very real increase in knowledge and interest in Chinese art of the past few years is certainly a tribute to all lenders and donors, and particularly to the Menzies who have loaned works to the Gallery in the past. A special exhibition of the Menzies collection as a whole is overdue!
