  • Hamsterley Farm. Recollections of a Noble Victoria Family. The Pease family played a very important role in the development of Cadoboro Bay during the early part of this century. Algernon Henry Pease (1883-1955) (England) and Letitia Jean Pease (nee Brydges from Nova Scotia) purchased 10 acres in 1911 on the corner of Sinclair and Haro Roads and built a fourteen - room house and water tower on the steep slope overlooking Cadboro Bay. This well financed, ingenious and energetic couple farmed pigs, cows and chickens, and grew mixed fruit, flowers and vegetables. They had a stall in the public market, started a milk route and dabbled in real estate. During the First World War their boat, the Legal Limit, was enlisted for patrol work around Victoria Harbour. Later they opened Hamsterley Tea Room on teh Malahat and built and operated the Toby Jug at Elk Lake. Both Mr. and Mrs. Pease were conscious of teh need for community service. Mr. Pease was awarded an M.B.E. by King George VI for his work in establishing the B.C. Salvage Corps during the Second World War and Mrs Pease helped establish the Bundles for Britain Program.
