Dec [December] 12 [1957] Wake Isl. [Island]
Spent the morning photographing
the birds. There are at the
moment about 150 frigates
only about 20 of them ad [adult] males
Some early courting seen. Red
footed boobies accounted for
numbered 25 including 1 brown
bird on nest + 1 apparent juv [juvenile]
hanging around.
At night the island is
squawling [?] with terns reported
last year to have covered a
nesting area of 40-50 acres as
thick as they could sit. By
day none are to be seen.
Saw none on the ground
even at night.
Saw 2 wandering tattlers.
2 curlew - about 100 -
120 golden plover perhaps
more. These mostly
concentrated in the borrow pits
between the air strip + the lagoon
where there is a large swampy
area covered with Salicornia.
There was an abundance of
fiddler crab burrows here
but I saw no crabs only cast off
claws. Saw an orange colored
shore crab + captured 3 small
skinks. Saw at least half a dozen
other skinks but they got down
crab burrows. Caught a young
gekko [gecko] but later lost it.
Saw several other gekkos [geckos], including
large adults but was unable
to catch them.
Caught 2 silvery fish, I think
1 a mullet in the lagoon after
dark by chasing them up onto
the salicornia.
Film was exposed at a meter
setting reading of 160 for Plus X
with meter registering 800 in the
sun - never less than 400.
1" [inch] lens at f20, + filter + shutter at 1/2
