push up + one has to approach with
caution. The hole down may be
more than 18" [inches] in diameter. [Bert] Boxer
thinks that the gas not only keeps the
ice open but helps warm the
push up. From 2 to 8 rats may
be found in the one push up
in the spring months.
Ice conditions:- Usually freezes down about 4 ft [feet]
to 5 ft [feet] but 1945-46 was a very cold
winter + froze 6 or 7 ft [feet] - no snow.
On opening the push ups in the spring
trappers found many rats too weak
to get away. Many were frozen in
+ died. The traders report that
the hides were thin + pelage poor but
that they are better again this year.
Harvesting:- trapped rats bring better
prices than shot.
1945 trapped shot
1946 " [trapped] " [shot]
1947 " [trapped] " [shot] 80 [cent symbol]
Males are said to be shot more abundantly
than [female symbol]'s but [Bert] Boxer states that on his
last nights shoot this year he took 15
[female symbol], 14 [male symbol]'s.
Breeding:- This year some [male symbol]'s taken during
the shoot did not yet have the testes enlarged
