- Jasper Alta. [Alberta] May 4/44 [1944]
Today patrolled east to the gate
+ returned reaching Jasper at 9:30
P.M. At Talbot Lake saw an
interesting concentration of water
birds. Most of the ducks were
in flocks + quite wild + obviously
migrants. Not so the goldeneye
+ many of the mallards. Waterfowl
seen were. 8 Swan, 16 geese
16 Pintail, 16 Shovellor, 9 Green w. [winged] Teal,
2 Amer. [American] mergansers + many mallard + Barrows
goldeneye. 1 Ring billed gull, 1 Bonaparte
gull + 1 greater yellowlegs.
The game range is in terrible
shape, over wide areas there is
absolutely nothing to eat. From Talbot
Lake east for 3 miles is just a
drifting waste of sand. Range conditions
have deteriorated even since last year.
Jack Hargreaves + [Alex] Nelles both remark
on the absence of wild flowers on
the valley floor. They are quite
right. Except for scattered anemone
patens, some Gillardia + aster there
is nothing. They speak of the
profusion of wild flowers 20 years
ago.
