Weather. Strong west wind with rain
squalls. 3 hrs [hours] in field, 20 deer
seen.
Six deer, 1 buck 1 yearling doe
2 old does + 2 fawns bedded
down close together in lee of
rocky cliff at 11:30 A.M. 1 Buck
+ 1 doe together feeding 11:40
on lee side of bluff. 3 does
making off from lee of
adjoining bluff. 4 deer jumped
from bushes bordering swamp.
1 spike hermaphrodite [word crossed out] jumped from
bed near swamp on smelling
us + made off across the
valley stopping frequently
to look ahead of it. After
travelling for 10 minutes is [it]
squatted doe-like to urinate.
5 minutes later it found a
doe bedded down + lay down
beside it. 1 doe + 1 fa [words crossed out]
Beds. All these deer were bedded on
the lee side of a steep hill, all were
lying with their backs uphill
toward the wind + watching
downhill away from the wind.
Consequently by staying
slightly off wind of them
we found it possible to advance
in full view until within
