fresh wolf tracks on the trail also
fresh grizzly tracks. Much marten sign.
Shale banks May 18, 1944
Today hiked up to east lick
+ then took the trail made by the
goat coming down to the lick
+ followed it to the top of the
ridge east of here
Laster inspected the flats at the
mouth of Strawberry Creek. Here
the willows have been very heavily
browsed, many are dead, there
are no young aspens, Eleagnus [underlined] is
browsed 60-70%. The grazing
conditions here are good. The grass is
50-50 Downy wild rye + slender wheat
grass, the carryover is at least 50%
Moose + elk have both wintered here.
Game seen:- 8 deer
9 goat 3 seen previously
3 elk
10 sheep
Willow Creek. May 19/44 [1944]
Left Shalebank at 10:15 + arrived here
at 2:55 - distance 15 to 16 miles.
Weather cloudy but good - west wind
In late afternoon hot sun.
Grass growth here has just started
+ willows are just bursting bud scales
