nests in cottonwood tree. These were 4 + 6 ft. [feet]
above ground + were composed of cedar bark
+ "cotton". Very beautifully made. A [male symbol] squirrel
was collected here, it was quite silent.
July 19. 1937. Alt. [Altitude] 3400 ft. [feet], Set out traps in early
morning. In trap set previously took an ad. [adult] [female symbol]
Peromsycus (Measurements avg. [average] similar to those
taken in the Monashee Pass + here at mile
18 cabin..- Squirrels exceedingly plentiful
+ shot three. Early this a.m. saw two
Rufous-backed chickadees just below camp.
Came to owl call. Took a MacGillivray
Warbler in same place, a [female symbol]. In afternoon
drove up to summit, 6200 ft. [feet], en route
saw two Red-tailed Hawks, one of which [Ian McTaggart] Cowan
collected. seven Citellus about summit,
all females except one. Note that the
males of both birds + mammals here
seem to come out more freely in the
early morning + the females later or
in the day. - In evening hunted
bats, saw one in same place as #127 was
taken, a quarter of a mile below cabin. Also
saw a rabbit cross the road in the dusk.
Watched with much interest a flying
squirrel soar from a tall spruce tree across
road + land near the base of some small
pines + balsam. Had an excellent view of
the animal as it glided past me. Noted
that the "flight" was perfectly straight from
Marginalia: 136, 139
