- Ovis canadensis
on Vimy Mountain, Warden B. [Bert] Barnes
saw 45 on one day on Blakiston [illegible word]
this spring + there are others further
north in the park.
Frederick Herbert (Bert)] Riggall has shot 75 +/- rams on his
parties with basal circumference
better than 16" + 40 or 50 better
than 17". Several better than
42" curl + 2 of about 46
including the 4th in the record list.
Waterton. July 18/45 [1945]
F.H. [Frederick Herbert (Bert)] Riggall of Twin Butte tells me
that in the winter of 1927 the sheep
were almost wiped out in a heavy
very local storm. The area did not
extend N [north] of Pincher nor more than half
way down Glacier park + recovery was
very rapid - 4 or 5 years. But details
were as follows:- On May 20 or thereabouts
it snowed steadily [underlined] for 2 or 3 days with
temperatures just on the freezing
point. This left 42" on Hawks nest.
his hill top cottage - the heaviest fall
in his memory of over 40 years.
This snow lay for 14 days + terminated
with 2 nights of heavy frost. The
game was high, following new ground
+ many were bogged completely,
whole bands died where they stood.
A few that got into willow swales
survived.
