- Cervus canadensis [underlined]
Banff, Alta. [Alberta] June 8/43 [1943].
Census:- Saw 24 bulls
89 cows
5 yearlings
7 newborn calves
The bulls were all near Banff - as far
west as 18 mile. All the calves were
near Lake Louise. All elk from 42 mile in.
Saw one cow at 42 mile up the
Jasper highway but none farther up than
that. Strip not over 200 yards to 150 yards.
= pop [population] of 23 per sq. [square] mile.
Antlers:- Saw one spike with antlers still on
+ winter coat intact. Most of the valley bulls
Moult:- 3 cows completely in their summer
hair.
Migration:- In 1942 E. [Ernest] Young passed a
band of 5 bulls at Mosquito Cr. [Creek] on the
road. Later that day he saw
them again almost 40 miles up the road
+ still travelling. Apparently they were
moving from the Bow Valley to the
Saskatchewan Valley.
Winter Range
Quite a band of elk winter along the
Saskatchewan from the Park Boundary to
about 103 mile. Warden estimate 100 +/- head.
Summer range by nature of country
restricted to almost same boundaries as
winter range.
