- Canis lupus
In January 4 wolves came down the Poboktan
Creek + right down to the cabin
area.
Also in January he [Frank Wells] saw tracks
of two separate bands in the
Buffalo Prairie area, one of 5 + one
of 7. Saw no sign of these
wolves crossing the road + going
up west.
He feels that perhaps 15 wolves
were active along the Athabasca
[illegible word] as far as the Miette River.
He found one buck deer, a
pet, that tried to winter near
the cabin, It had been pulled down
on the rivers edge.
He also says that he has seen
25 or 30 elk at a time standing
in the river. The main defence
of all these animals when harried
by either wolf or grizzly is to get
into water. They some times
stay until fatally chilled. He found
an elk in that state last fall
+ has taken several deer out of
the river only just alive. All
eventually died.
Jasper. May 6
Braznet tells me that there were no wolves
in his area last winter.
