Test for diamonds
Prick a needle hole through a card and
look at it through the doubthful stone. If
it is false, 2 holes will be seen on the
card; if it is a diamond, only 1 hole
will be seen, for Every other stone at all
resembling the diamond, gives a double
reflection. This property is made use of
for determining an uncertain stone.
If the finger is placed behind the stone,
and looked at it through a magnifier, the
grain of the skin will be plainly visible
if the stone is not a diamond, but if
it is a diamond, it will not be
distinguishable at all. A diamond in
a solid setting made [may] be identified in the
same way; if genuine, the setting at the
back cannot be distinguished, but if a
false stone, Either the foil or the setting
can be seen
