Bowl with white slip and transparent glaze. Exterior is undecorated, while interior rim is decorated with three narrow circular bands containing and separating two wavy lines. In the centre of the bowl is an inscription which mentions the bowl was presented to someone in the fifth year of the Yuantong reign period. There is a Yuantong reign period during the Yuan dynasty, but there are two problems with this date. First, the character tong, although pronounced the same, is written differently here. Secondly, the Yuantong reign period lasted only two years (1333-5). However, since there was much turmoil in China at thistime, the calligrapher might not have known the correct characters and may not have been aware that the name of the reign period had been changed. Therefore, the possible date for the bowl might be 1337.
