- Feb. [February] 9, 1939. Goldstream Lakes
Time 8:15 AM - 3 PM. Snowing
all day, 10" - 18" new snow on ground
highest temp [temperature] in 24 hrs [hours] 22 [degree symbol], lowest
15 [degree symbol].
Census 5 deer seen + many more tracks
encountered. Area actually covered
was about 1 half section
Tracks were found mostly on
the open sidehills where salal
beds existed below open stand
of fir trees. Very few tracks
in the thickets + gullies where
the snow was [illegible word crossed out] deeper.
Followed the tracks of one
deer - sex not determined - it
walked most of the time until
it crossed our fresh tracks
there is had slid to a stop
+ run down hill into
the heavy bottom growth.
A doe and juv [juvenile] buck followed
by us for almost 2 miles
had been feeding in the
cedar thickets bordering a
swampy meadow, in one place
the small one had gone under
a log 18 inches off the ground
rather than jump over it.
They walked out into the
swamp to a small piece of
open water, drank + then
