Waterton Lakes. July 10, 1945.
Mr De Weber tells me that in 1923 one
of the forest wardens accidentally shot
an elk on the Clearwater - had never
seen one before. By 1929 they were
becoming more numerous - Find out
when Pembina Reserve set up + where
elk came from.
In this region he estimates about
1500 head of elk summer in
Montana at the head of Belly River
+ drift down through + out of the
Park in the winter.
First one to leave park seen
in 1932 - next year 7 + so on
States that there are elk on the
head of Castle River outside the N. [north] boundary
of the park + that these also move
down + out sometimes as far as
farming country.
About 1500 head of cattle graze
in the park under permit
