- Cervus [underlined]
Miette R [River] to Yellowhead Pass April 20/43 [1943]
growth of willow, alder, dogwood, raspberry
etc [etcetera] (see journals) + in this there
has been moderate elk activity by
count of fecal piles 28 elk to 5 moose
to 1 deer.
At Decoigne the warden R.H. White
has seen 150 elk in one band +
estimates about double that. Here
chawing is in evidence. But due to
heavier precipitation there is still
feed (grass) available on the bottoms
though it is of a less palatable
variety + the hillside is pretty
well grazed off.
Census:- At mile 4-5 on north bank.
8 cows + 4 calves - at Yellowhead Pass
1 cow + 1 old Bull. 7 Elk at lower
edge of Dominion Prairie on N [North] Side, 5 elk
crossed road near mile 6 = 26 elk today.
Kills: a prime bull pulled down by 6
wolves examined. Wolves had caught
him by nose, throat + flank after
a very short run. Torn out throat.
Eaten most of him but not bones.
Coyotes worked on carcass - in fact
still working. Not much snow when
he was pulled down. Hair of another
animal - said to have been a young on [one]
seen. Killed by same wolf pack.
