  • Cowichan Lake. April 26/40 [1940]. Moult:- Of the several deer seen today one doe had the pelage very badly worn. So much so that the area on both sides of the root of the tail + to a certain extent on each flank appeared white at a distance. There was also a patch the size of a man's hand behind the left shoulderblade. Most of the deer seen showed signs of wear on the flanks. Scatology. The spring feces of the deer as observed this month are quite unlike the winter pellets [diagram] winter spring. [text in diagram] as a result of being softer the spring pellets are distorted in shape + often joined together sometimes end to end in considerable strings.
