- Journal May 10
Examined the Miette ranges + found
the browse including Eleagnus 30%
cornus 50% to 70%, Salix 50% + aspen in good
to fair condition all the way down
from about 2 miles east of Devona.
The grass on the bluffs at
Miette is however badly over
grazed but quite as much so
as at Devona + west. Carryover
is 10% or less + most of this
is unavailable as it is flat on
the ground. Seed head carryover
is better because of game
antipathy to seed heads. For
this reason it seems to me that
game grazing, concentrated during
the winter after the grass has
seeded is not nearly so serious
as summer over use, provided
that the clumps are not killed
by too heavy spring cropping.
Devona - May 11, 1944
Hiked back from Miette coming
most of the way cross country
to the edge of the bluffs + along
the N. [North] edge of muddy Creek. Berstrom
says he has counted once as many
as 42 goat on this slope - 20 on
several occassions. [occasions]
In afternoon drove up to Celestine
