- Ondatra [underlined]
Push up:- We obtained some material
from a push up on some drift
ice. Sample preserved - see no
sign of this being eaten.
Food:- All animals seen today were
feeding on new tips of Equisetum
or by far the greatest number
on a fleshy, pale yellow rhizome.
This was floating in windrows
along certain parts of the shore.
Did the rats cut it or did the
ice break it loose?
Harvest:- Could the season be opened
earlier for trapping. If there is a
winter loss this could be added to
the catch + even if some unprime
pelts were taken the average price might
be greater than that for shot rats?
8 mi [miles] N. [north] Aklavik. June 12/47 [1947]
Our 14 traps took 2 rats [male symbol] + [female symbol].
[female symbol] upset the trap + drowned.
Took [female symbol] for examination see sheet 2879
Weather + activity:-
Today was cold + stormy + the rats
were not nearly as active as they
were yesterday. Saw about half
as many. Watched 2 eating
tips of Equisetum [underlined] spring shoots.
