- Banff, Alta. [Alberta] Cervus canadensis [underlined] April 27/43 [1943]
Census:- 250 elk including 16 bulls at least,
of these 3 spikes with antlers + 3, 2-3 yr [year]
olds with antlers. All these in a distance
of 6 miles on the east side of the
valley. 57 of these elk were on the S. [south] facing
slope of Grassy Mt [Mountain] + grazing with them
9 sheep.
According to [Ernest] Stenton these elk have only
just come down, they wintered far up the
Cascade + Cutbank in the burned over
areas. Signs indicate this to be collect [word crossed out] correct
The elk have been browsing grass almost
entirely leaving the willow to the moose.
Here there is direct + intense competition
with the sheep + the condition of the
grass on the higher slopes indicates
that the area is fully stocked + any [word crossed out] much
increase in sheep will not be possible
with the present elk concentration
Elk were working through the
snow right to the summits at
7000'.
1 Group of 8 bulls together, all others
separate except 2 [illegible word crossed out] spikes with cow
groups.
