- animals are in poor condition - perhaps 17 years to calving.
The thorny acacias here are almost certainly an evolutionary
response to giraffe browsing. They are much less thorny above
16' [feet], beyond the reach of giraffe.
As I write the roar of hunting hyenas can be heard
periodically above the gnu + zebra + the yapping of the jackal
joins the chorus from time to time. The rushing noise of thousands
of running wildebeest pounding through the long grass must be one
of the worlds most interesting noises.
June 25 [1967]
What a night - one of the most memorable of my entire life - All night
long the gnu, zebra + hyena kept up their continuous noise, twice minor
stampedes went by. These times I woke to the roaring of lions. There was a 3/4
moon rising about 10 + setting well after the sun was up. By its light you
could see the dark circle of animals some 1-200 yds [yards] away + all round us.
The sounds are difficult to describe the hyena have a variety of calls, a
common one was closely like a hereford cow bulling - When they were
bullying each other or in strife the laughing call was used. The zebra
had a high pitched barking sequence + the groaning grunts of gnu.
At sun up there was some more lion noise to the north, 9 hyena
were around the dens + 1 large animal was chasing another all over
the lot with appropriate noises from both. The chased one came
within 20 yds [yards] of the car for respite. Through the glasses we saw
21 hyena on the hillside to the south, running in a group toward
the big herds. These broke + scampered but no serious chase occurred.
