- Ondatra.
Enemies:- At Lang's saw another instance
of a black bear attempting to
dig out a rat nest.
Behavior:- At most of the bank dens
we note a new behavior, almost [word crossed out]
small piles of muck + bottom
debris have been carried from
the water + placed on the
ground overlying the burrows.
This seems to me to be a
manifestation of the same instinct
to build that we see at this
season in house-living rats +
in beavers.
I do not know whether it is
the young or the old rats that
are doing this but from the
size of the "bundles" suspect
the latter.
Holes in the roofs of tunnels
are plugged with the same
debris.
Lang's Post. Aug. [August] 11, 1947.
Last night we took 5 rats in the six
traps set out this [word crossed out] in the morning + we set out
another 17.
See over the page for layout of
lake + traps.
