It occurs to me that trap lines
should not be issued to women
except widows or elderly spinsters
Certain men are getting trapping
licenses on the liquor permit
principle + justifying large areas on
that basis
Aklavik. July 4/47 [1947]
The boat arrived today + we
spent all day handling freight
+ trying to make our canoe
+ skiff seaworthy. The skiff is
an antique piece of junk, there
are no oars + it needs caulking
+ painting. The canoe needs
some patches scraped + painted before
it is used + the outboard
though tested + found defective
was sent down in an unserviceable
condition. A poor advertisement
for the elaborate maintenance
set up a Fort Smith.
July 5/47 [1947]
[Lee] Post + I spent all morning
overhauling the new outboard.
In the afternoon Ward [Stevens] + I
made a short test run + the
thing stopped again.
[Lee] Post + I tinkered with the 3
motors + finally have all of
