  • 5 We steamed close against the Irish coast all day. It was most fascinating to see the livestock in the fields + to note the steep slopes they are using for pasture purposes. As the sun went down we passed close under the lee of the Isle of Man + had a gun salute from the lightkeeper. Birds were much in evidence large number of herring gulls, about 6 lesser black-backed gulls + 2 greater black backs plus a few kittiwake made up the gull train. Here + there I saw 4 dovekie, 3 gannet, 1 greater skua, + 3 cormorant. July 18. Arrived Liverpool in a downpour at 6 AM. Disembarked at 8:15 + had no trouble at all clearing customs. We then sailed into the archaic baggage handling system here + mastered it to get ourselves + baggage onto the 9:45 train for Edinburgh. Our first meal in Britain, served on the train lacked frills + ceremony but was good. Soup, roast pork with a solution (dilute) of apple, and a choice of desserts. We were late arriving in Edinburgh but were met by Jim [J.D. Cowan], Evie + Meta [Cowan]. All looking rather old + tired but most cheerful.
