  • Odocoileus virginianus. [underlined] Kootenay Park., B.C. April 29/43. [1943] Saw first whitetails 2 mi [miles] W. [west] of Vermilion Crossing on river bars, 2 others lying on bars a mile or so further down still others in lodgepole pine woods near Kootenay Crossing. In all 15 seen 4 were [male symbol], 2 [female symbol] + 1 fawn of last year. Others not id. [identifiable] as to sex + age. These deer had extraordinary long tails marked by a strongly black tip + showing a narrow white fringe. H.U. Green of Banff reports from heresay whitetails present in summer about Herberts Lake 3-4 mi [miles] N [north] of L. [lake] Louise. The dog-like loping gait of these deer was very noticeable after the constant association with mule deer. Banff, B.C. June 8/43. [1943] Saw 4 whitetail does, Two feeding in a sedgemeadow at 96 mile on the Jasper Highway and two on the roadside at 92 mile. Speed:- The latter two ran 27 mph [miles per hour] for about 200 yards. Wintering:- These deer must have wintered in the Sask. [Saskatchewan] valley as they could not yet have crossed the passes from the west.
