- Coast Deer.
Nov. [November] 6, 1936. Malahat, V.I. [Vancouver Island]
Deer feeding on Cladonia [word crossed out]
Usnea on a newly felled Douglas
fir tree. They seem to prefer
this to any other food available
just now. Mr E. Cooke reports that
in September 1935 he felled a large
fir + while he was working
on the butt 2 deer began
feeding on the Usnea hanging
from the branches.

Examined stomach of 2 pt [point] buck
killed accidentally on road at 2 AM of
dark moonless night. Stomach
full. contents 90% by bulk
Green [word crossed out] Red alder; 10% thimble berry

Very dry - no rain for weeks.
Frosty, Full moon. Deer very active
at night. Starting to run.
Saw 3 does but country full of
deer. They are all bedding down
in the big salal bottoms.
At this time no deciduous vegetation
is available but the deer were
feeding extensively on the
young leaves of salal - in places
over areas 25 ft [feet] square all
the salal tips had been
