- Westwick Lake Wednesday, June 1.
Weather: 6:00 AM. fine; morning: cloudy
afternoon: rain.
In the morning Tim [Miles Timothy Myres] made a
ladder, and then he and Nancy [Mahoney]
looked into bird holes. In one,
Nancy announced "young" and
then pulled out the [female symbol] sapsucker.
They banded the sapsucker, and
5 European starling young. They
made a count of nests (57 cliff swallows) on the
ranch buildings. The mud on
the swallow's nests is of two
colours:- light, from the lake, and
dark, from the road. I forked
the garden, and in the afternoon
Nancy and I hoed and raked,
and planted the seeds: radishes,
endive, lettuce, chard, beans, pink
beets and corn. Tim [Miles Timothy Myres] checked
recorders and wrote notes.
There were three clutches in the
swallow's nests - C-1; C-1; C-2.
In the evening he found a
Brewers Blackbird's nest, and a
Kildeer [Killdeer] Plover's nest.
Thursday, June 2 Westwick Lake.
Nancy [Mahoney] watched grebes. I worked
with violets, and Tim [Miles Timothy Myres] found
yellowhead nests C-1 C-3 C4 C4
