Byng Pass:- Aug [August] 26/43 [1943]
Census [underlined] From camp saw
2 old [female symbol], 1 large calf.
1 juv [juvenile] [male symbol], 1 [female symbol]
6 other caribou apparently [female symbol]'s or young [male symbol]'s.
Behavior:- The most restless animals I have ever
seen. Eat a few bites + move a few yards
+ all movement is at the trot. Shy at
all sorts of objects like a scary horse
Just now many of them are spending
much of the day on the high shale ridges
where the high wind keeps the flies off.
Continual tail twitching + stomping of the
hind feet when feeding in daytime suggests
fly attack other than bots. But Bot
attack is taking place also + frequently
stampedes them.
We notice that when caribou
cross a shale slide they do so as individuals
+ each is likely to take its own course
As a result instead of 4 or 5 good
trails as sheep or goat would have there
may be as high as 40 or 50 separate
tracks.
