Healy Cr. [Creek] June 19/43 [1943]
Left camp at 8:30 and rode
steadily up Brewster creek for
4 hours, an estimated 12 miles.
Weather fine with scattered clouds.
First 2 miles of trail runs
through heavy timber, then
about 2 miles along open brushy
meadows adjoining the creek. Rest
of the way through an old burn.
West side regenerating rapidly to
an open stand of Pine + spruce.
East side open with aspen
coming in on the slides. Plenty
of grassy slides. Brush is
willow, tall + short, shepherdia
+ lonicera, scattered Ribes bushes.
Elk sign outnumbers moose 2 to 1
Willows + young aspens seriously
overbrowsed - willows 90-98%
+ many dead, practically no flowering
and what seen was on the
dwarf salix - it has its flowers
very low down - some of them
snow protected. This valley
is fully stocked if not slightly
overstocked
Game seen:- Moose 10
Elk 5
deer 3
Goat 4.
Deer are all right down still - within 2
miles of Bow valley.
