One Spike still bore antlers.
Jasper. May 5.
Today saw 6 Cows on Maligne road
+ 21 elk including 4 [female symbol] + 4 [male symbol] on
Athabasca above Miette + on Buffalo Prairie
Frank Wells reports a band of
about 100 on the flats near
his cabin + thinks that perhaps
250 range the upper Athabasca
+ in as far as Fortress Lake.
Disease:- A week ago he saw a very
weak calf. Last fall he shot
a cow that was standing, completely
exhausted, in the river after being
run by some predator.
Has found no winter kills this year.
Enemies:- Wolves were harrying this band
constantly all winter.
In December a grizzly killed a
cow + a large bull on the west
side of the river + completely devoured
them.

Census: Saw 16 elk that I had not seen
previously. 7 males on the slopes of
Tunnel Mt. [Mountain] The 16 consisted of 4 [female symbol], 12 [male symbol]
Winter kill:- Hargreaves in many miles of
riding this year has found only
1 elk carcase [carcass].
